Youth Cinema Collective

Youth Cinema Collective provides a space for teens who are passionate about filmmaking and film’s ability to share stories that may otherwise go untold. Teens delve into all areas of the filmmaking process as they take their original, high-quality film projects from script and storyboard to shooting on location to a final screening at the Alamo Drafthouse.

Youth Cinema Collective is consistently recognized at the Community Art Center of Cambridge’s “Do It Your Damn Self” Youth Film Festival. It won multiple Austin Youth Film Festival awards and won the 2018 SXSW Community Service Award for film.

A collaboration between Creative Action and Expect Respect (a program of @safeatx), Changing Lives Youth Theatre Ensemble is a group of teen artist-activists that create and tour original, youth-led performances focused on violence prevention, healthy relationships, and social justice. Every spring the ensemble tours their original show across greater Austin, reaching more than 3,000 young people at area middle schools and in community settings. Through the powerful medium of peer education and theatre, Changing Lives gives young adults the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support healthy relationships and stand up against violence and bullying as courageous allies.

Here at Creative Action, students foster their skills as Critical Thinkers, building adaptability, flexibility, and emotional intelligence, ultimately helping them to become better problem solvers.

These skills include executive function and self-regulation skills, which are the mental processes that enable them to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully.

Students at Blanton Elementary got to take a ride on one of CapMetro’s busses, completed a short curriculum around riding the bus and sustainability, and created this amazing song with Mr. Freddy.

This song and video is part of SmART stops, another collaboration between Creative Action and CapMetro (@capmetroatx). Through interactive learning and the creation of art interventions in a variety of media by our students, the goal is to grow a better understanding of the impact of the transit system, as well as develop a deeper connection to our buses, encouraging awareness and use of public transit.

We would like to take the time to welcome our new Executive Director—Patrick Torres (he/him)!

As you may know, Karen LaShelle is transitioning out of her role as Creative Action’s Executive Director, and passing the baton to Patrick, an artist, educator, and leader with history at Creative Action as the Middle and High School Program Director from 2011-2014.

Now one week back at Creative Action and in this new role, Patrick is focused on building relationships with the Creative Action team, and getting to know what Creative Action has grown into since he was last here.
