Art, Kids, and Mental Health Awareness Month (Feat. A Free DIY!)
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we believe that art is a powerful tool for anyone to maintain their mental well being. Along with this article, we’ve included a free tutorial for DIY Affirmation Bracelets for Kids. Keep reading and keep creating!
According to a 2018 poll by Americans For The Arts 69% of the population believe art lifts them up beyond everyday experiences. We agree! This month (and every month) is an opportune time for parents and caregivers to highlight and prioritize the mental health of children and adolescents.
Did you know that engaging in art…
Calms Feelings of Isolation?
The act of creating art offers a unique outlet to express ourselves no matter what that looks like. It celebrates the individual while connecting us all through the experience of creating and observing. Art can heal feelings of isolation, being overwhelmed, and anxiety through that connection and focus.
Reduces Stress?
Making art activates the creative part of the brain, diverting attention away from stressors and anxieties and inducing a sense of calm. Through art, children learn to regulate their emotions, channeling negative feelings into productive and original outlets. This process can provide immediate relief from stress and equip children with lifelong coping skills to manage stress and navigate emotional challenges – whether it’s making their own or enjoying the work of someone else.
Builds Self-Esteem?
Artistic expression fosters a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-esteem. When children create art, they have the freedom to explore their imagination, take risks, and make choices. As they witness their ideas materialize, they can gain a sense of pride and self-worth. Art also allows children to appreciate their unique perspectives and creative abilities, promoting a positive self-image and a healthy sense of identity.
During Mental Health Awareness Month, we acknowledge the important ways art supports young minds in their journey to being emotionally and overall well. In doing so, we are happy to share this new art project for DIY Affirmation Bracelets for Kids.
DIY Affirmation Bracelets for Kids (Ages 8-12)
An affirmation is a statement used to reinforce a belief, boost self-confidence, or find comfort. Affirmations can help shift negative thoughts into more constructive thinking patterns. Simply repeat your affirmation to yourself as needed. Here are some affirmations we like, but feel free to make your own:

Materials:
- Embroidery thread
- Pony beads in your favorite color or shades of green as a reminder for Mental Health Month
- Letter Beads
- Tape
- Scissors
1: Prepare your materials
Gather all the materials listed above. It’s a good idea to lay the letter beads out in the words/phrases you want to use. That way you can easily create your design.
2. Measure and cut the thread
Measure the thread around your wrist leaving enough for tying knots and getting the bracelet on and off over your hands. Tape the thread on one end to your work surface for easier beading.
3: Create your design
Select your first bead and slide it all the way down the thread from the un-taped end to the taped end. Choose another bead and slide it down next to the first bead. Continue adding beads in your desired pattern.
4: Tie the ends
Once you’re happy with the bracelet, it’s time to tie the ends together. Carefully remove the tape and lift the beaded thread off of your work surface. Pull the two ends together and tie a double knot. Cut the excess thread being careful not to cut the knot.
Wear your affirmation bracelet when you believe you’ll need a positive reminder from yourself!
