Outside the Lines
Outside the Lines is a 4-6 week middle or high school school-based arts residency designed to spark conversations about making schools welcoming and inclusive to LGBTQIA students. Working with a Creative Action Teaching Artist and a member of the AISD Social and Emotional Learning Department, students discuss the climate of their school, learn tools and techniques to make the school more welcoming, and create an original play that reflects their school and highlights the challenges of being a LGBTQIA student.
They then rehearse their original play and present a staged reading at a school staff and faculty meeting to educate the leaders on the campus about the real-life challenges and situations LGBTQIA students face on a daily basis in school settings. The staged reading is followed by a facilitated discussion to help the teachers and administration feel prepared to make the school more inclusive.
